Recently, the Federal Trade Commission of the United States government went “all in” to try to stop tech support scammers. “Operation Tech Trap” was initiated in the late spring of this year and currently has brought 29 actions, including indictments, guilty pleas, and additional charges, against deceptive tech support operations in the United States and overseas. Unfortunately, these criminals rarely go away quietly and much work is still left to be done, but finally the United States government is moving to shut them down.

The most effective tool any organization or individual computer user has against these scammers is a firm, working relationship with a local, known, legitimate (I’ve met you face-to-face and even been to your office) technical support provider. Building relationships with local businesses and the people, your neighbors who work there, is essential in protecting yourself from these scammers. Better, yet, is a managed services agreement whereby your local IT support professionals – yes, those neighbors that you can go see anytime you want – provide real-time proactive maintenance on your computer(s) and can give you peace of mind and real data security.
